Global Science Café 4: Challenges of Developing Serious Video Games - Attentat 1942

Date of event: 30. 11. 2020 As the fourth part of the Global Science Café series, we bring you a discussion with Jakub Gemrot and Vít Šisler from the Charles Games studio. This time we will address the issue of developing narrative games which offer innovative ways to explore serious themes.

GSC: Challenges of Developing Serious Video Games

Počítačové hry jsou zdrojem informací, zábavy i napětí. Přitahují pozornost hráčů, zároveň budí emoce – jsou častým terčem kritiků. V „dobách covidových“ však čím dál tím více získávají na síle. Co když se zrodil fenomén ne zcela nepodobný oblasti filmu? Je možné, aby „videohry“ ovlivňovaly naši společnost? Lze odhadnout vývoj daného oboru? Na tyto otázky – a řadu dalších – budeme hledat odpovědi v rámci internetového setkání nazvaného Charles Games: Challenges of Developing Serious Video Games, zaměřeného na téma „nový život v kyberprostoru“.

Nenechte si ujít možnost ojedinělého setkání s mladými českými vědci a odborníky zaměřenými na oblast videoher. Do virtuálního studia ČVUT přicházejí s moderátorem Michaelem Londesboroughem diskutovat Vít Šisler a Jakub Gemrot.

Charles Games is the studio behind the award-winning game Attentat 1942. Charles Games focuses on narrative games and enjoys coming up with innovative ways to explore serious themes.

Charles Games Studio is based in Prague and is currently developing a new historical game Svoboda 1945: Liberation. Charles Games was established as a spin-off of Charles University and represents a unique connection between the academic sphere and the gaming business.

About the guests

Vít Šisler is a teacher at FFUK and an assistant professor in the field of New Media Studies. His research focuses on information and communication technologies in the Middle East and educational games and simulations. As part of his doctoral studies, he completed a research internship at Nortwestern University in Chicago on a Fulbright scholarship. Vít Šisler is the main designer of the game Attentat 1942.
Jakub Gemrot studied computer science at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University. He is currently teaching at the Charles University. In 2015 he was involved in the creation of a new field "computer game development". Jakub Gemrot is the managing director of Charles Games and one of the programmers of the game Attentat 1942.

About the presenter

Michael Londesborough je britský vědec pracující v Ústavu anorganické chemie Akademie věd ČR, zaměřuje se na výzkum sloučenin boru. Je držitelem mnoha vědeckých ocenění, mj. třikrát vyhrál cenu pro české/slovenské mladé anorganické chemiky. Spolupracuje s British Council v Praze, podílí se na popularizačních projektech Akademie věd ČR, České televize a Národního technického muzea. Věnuje se zejména zpřístupňování vědy široké veřejnosti, vyučování mladých lidí a posilování mezinárodních vztahů mezi mladými vědci (soutěž FameLab). Za své popularizační aktivity získal např. od AV ČR Medaili Vojtěcha Náprstka (2009).
