safer spaces. out There and within is a long-term program of the Czech Centres focused on the notion of safety on both an individual and a collective level, particularly through culture and the arts
it explores the concept of safe space in two dimensions: on a personal level, as the cultivation of one’s mental and physical health, integrity, and resilience; and on a collective level, by considering the institutions and systems we live in and help shape as safe – that is, non-discriminatory, inclusive, considerate, and ethical
the program raises the question of the role that art and culture can play in these processes as drivers of potential positive change
its activities include an initial survey followed by artistic residencies, symposia, film screenings, exhibitions, workshops, performances, guidelines for working with physical spaces, and manuals
a key element is the collaboration with local communities (art institutions, non-profit organizations, community projects, etc.) as well as international experts. The program emphasizes an interdisciplinary and intergenerational approach, across the network of Czech Centres abroad
