Diskuze EUNIC – European Union National Institutes for Culture
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought cultural life, as we know it, to a standstill. The field of arts and culture has experienced gallery and theatre closings and festival cancellations that have brought the entire sector into a crisis. Parallel to that, women supporting and sustaining cultural organisations are facing increased challenges – a combined loss of commissions, with the added pressure of the second “domestic shift”, where women are most likely to take over support for home schooling and caring for the family and the elderly. Are we currently experiencing a shock in gender equality, paired with a shock in culture?
A EUNIC discussion with Mia Bays (Birds’ Eye View), Fatima Anllo (Observatory of Creation and Independent Culture), and Lena Hipp (Berlin Social Science Center) moderated by Helena Huber-Doudova(National Gallery Prague) seeks personal statements, as well as a system-oriented analysis of the impact of the pandemic on the field of arts, culture and gender in a European comparison.
