safer spaces. out there and within

art – dialogue – safety – inclusion – change

safer Spaces. out There and within is a long-term program of the Czech Centres focused on the notion of safety on both an individual and a collective level, particularly through culture and the arts

  • it explores the concept of safe space in two dimensions: on a personal level, as the cultivation of one’s mental and physical health, integrity, and resilience; and on a collective level, by considering the institutions and systems we live in and help shape as safe — that is, non-discriminatory, inclusive, considerate, and ethical
  • the program raises the question of the role that art and culture can play in these processes as drivers of potential positive change
  • its activities include an initial survey followed by artistic residencies, symposia, film screenings, exhibitions, workshops, performances, guidelines for working with physical spaces, and manuals
  • a key element is the collaboration with local communities (art institutions, non-profit organizations, community projects, etc.) as well as international experts. The program emphasizes an interdisciplinary and intergenerational approach, across the network of Czech Centres abroad
  • Curatorial collaboration: Karina Kottová
  • Graphic Design: Tereza Štindlová
  • Contact person: Hana Pištorová (pistorova@czechcentres.cz)
