The project Nomad is based on continuous research on the relationship of design and the “do it yourself” phenomenon and offers an opportunity to reflect on the beauty, utility and meaningof the things that surround us.
It shows that self-production does not have to be perceived only as an alternative, cheapand unaesthetic solution. On the contrary - that it brings a human-centred approach toproducts and makes the user understand and appreciate otherwise hidden ideas.
The process of creation thus becomes an integral part of the resulting object, a common experience.
Emphasis is placed on the activity of creation and forming a relationship with an object. The final product is hence a materialized documentation of this process, a documentation of newly acquired knowledge - completely different from the one we acquire simply by observing and using things. Knowledge acquired through creation.
In addition to the environmental aspects (such as reducing transport, packaging material and commercial overproduction), it brings humanity to the products and leads their users to understand and appreciate the hidden ideas.
The WORKSHOP – DO IT USE IT is designed on the same basis - self-manufacturability and consistent minimization of the number of necessary building elements and work operations (and thus cost reduction). At the same time, they can all be easily and quickly disassembled, moved and eassembled in another place (hence the name of the entire collection). Each of the objects uses a different mechanical principle, which then visually stands out thanks to
simple minimalist aesthetics.
The exhibition presents lamps or a coat-ract from the production of Studio Herrmann and Coufal, and within the workshop, visitors can make a TeePee hanger or a Tension lamp.
Tension is a dynamic floor lamp which can illuminate an entire room or just a book to read. It has an elegant body made of metal rod and a concrete base. The flexibility of the material allows the height of the luminaire to be adjusted using only the supply cable. All details werecut to minimum so that the simple beauty of tension stands out at first sight.
Czech design studio founded by two classmates while still studying at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. It started with one school assignment… and beer(s). Since then, the portfolio has expanded by a variety of projects, especially in the field of product design. They’re all based on a thorough search for balance between purpose and beauty, an emphasis on detail, and courage to go beyond the known boundaries. Although the creative work often involves an experimental series of trial and error, the resulting products are characterized by lightness and a casual, almost intuitive aesthetics.
Their designs are featured in the collections of leading Czech brands, in urban public spaces, as well as in conceptual art installations. Over the years, they’ve been awarded the prestigious Red Dot Award, Designblok Diploma Selection, Czech Grand Design Award, Elle Decoration International Award and others.
