The artwork, created to mark the event and the bicentenary of the birth of the Czech music composer Bedřich Smetana, refers to the opera Libuše, Talichová’s favourite work.
Coming from a family of musicians, it was Smetana's Libuše that inspired Tereza Talichová to create this special wooden figure. She has recreated the fanfare motif from the opera combining a playful approach and attention to detail.
The designer draws her ideas from her surroundings. As a city person with a cultural background, she is passionate about visual arts and music. From an artistic point of view, Tereza Talichová gets inspiration from the work of Minka Podhajská (1881-1963) and the Artěl artists. At the beginning of the 20th century, Artěl was at the birth of the reform movement of new toys which introduced artistic features to artisanal toy production.
What do Czech music and Smetana’s work mean to you?
"My childhood and memories of my father's rehearsals. He and the Talich Quartet played From My Life, Smetana's first Quartet in E minor. Only later did I learn that it is one of the world’s finest chamber music works.”
